How I diagnose the problem
I isolate power and water before I open the unit. I check the element, thermostat, anode, built-up scale and the safety valve. I check the cylinder is not dripping onto the electrics. With that I tell you whether a part is worth it or whether the heater is at the end of its life.

If the cylinder is lost, I take it down, quote a heater that fits the space and leave it filled and up to temperature.
