How I diagnose the problem
I check the model and the connection: mixer, crossheads, cartridge, thread or a concealed cistern. I test whether a washer is enough or whether the body is pitted by scale. On sanitaryware I check the seat, the seal, the bolts and the waste outlet. I do not buy a new tap until I know it fits your install.

Cistern mechanism
The water never stops or the tank will not fill. I change the float, seal or flush valve without touching the pan if it is unnecessary.
Pan seat and seal
The pan rocks or stains at the base. I remake the seal, tighten the bolts and check it stays dry.
Sanitaryware change
I replace a basin or pan while keeping existing connections when I can, so I do not open extra tiles.
