La Manga is a long strip between two seas. The call often comes when the owner opens the apartment and finds the heater off, a dried-out hose or a drain that has not run for months. Cabo de Palos is not an add-on to La Manga: it is a village with year-round houses, harbour premises and homes that fill in summer. Installations take salt, scale and months of little use. I am asked most for heaters that will not heat when the house is opened, seized shower taps and kitchen drains in ground floors that have been shut. If you arrive on a Friday night with no hot water, you do not wait for office hours: cover is 24 hours · 365 days.
The north end of La Manga —Veneziola, El Estacio and Puerto Tomás Maestre— holds high apartments, canals and communities with a caretaker or letterbox key. If you write from kilometre 20 I do not send you to someone else. Typical faults are hoses that burst when the main valve is opened, cisterns that will not stop after months shut and bidet or shower blockages from lack of use. I can meet the caretaker while you are in Madrid or abroad.
The strip is worked from south to north. The type of home changes on each stretch, not only the kilometre marker.
Cabo de Palos, Cala Reona and Cala Flores are village and coves with more year-round houses. Playa Honda, Playa Paraíso and the middle of the strip hold seasonal blocks. El Estacio, Tomás Maestre and Veneziola are height, canals and communities with a caretaker. Mar de Cristal, Islas Menores and Los Nietos sit on the inner Mar Menor shore; if you write from there, I come on the same coastal round.
On La Manga almost everything is a holiday home: the water sits for months and, when it is opened, hoses, heaters and drains fail.
You arrive at the apartment and there is a puddle under the sink or the cistern will not stop. I cover the strip at night and on holidays: I isolate, find it and leave it dry.
